Junior League of Pasadena Celebrates 95 years of Service

This year marks the Junior League of Pasadena’s 95th year serving the San Gabriel Valley community.
The JLP is celebrating this momentous accomplishment throughout 2021 by having its members complete 950 hours of training and community engagement, recognizing 95 women who have contributed to the success of the JLP, highlighting member’s 95 favorite recipes from its six cookbooks and hosting social celebrations with its membership and the community all year long.
“The Junior of Pasadena was started to help train and encourage female civic leaders. We see the effects of this training all around us,” JLP President Anna Agadjanyan said in a news release. “For 95 years, our amazing organization has been adjusting to the needs of our community and working to make our projects self-supporting. All of these efforts have allowed new organizations to flourish, have their own journeys, and develop more female civic leaders, who in turn develop their communities and leave their own legacies.”
The JLP was founded in 1926, and for the past 95 years it has promoted voluntarism, developed the potential of women, and worked to improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The League has significantly contributed to the Pasadena Senior Center, KidSpace Children’s Museum, Armory Center for the Arts, and the Cornerstone Cottage in Northwest Pasadena among others.
The JLP’s current focus area is the support and development of women with a specific focus on the development of business, entrepreneurship and leaderships skills. Through this focus, the JLP has helped women in the community learn and flex new skills by leading Lean In Circles, developing unique Women’s Career and Resume Workshops for women who have been out of the workforce for an extended period or those transitioning to new industries, donating clothing and supplies to Development Drives, advocating for statewide legislation, and reaching out to our fellow local nonprofit organizations to launch PasadenaHelp.org, a database of community services available to the people of Greater Pasadena.
Prior JLP focus areas have included Nurturing Children Through Family Support (1997-2015), Girls Rock! (2003-2006), Kids in the Kitchen (2008-2015) and My Masterpieces (2011-2014).
For 18 years, the JLP focused on Nurturing Children Through Family Support, which mostly concentrated on the James Madison Elementary School in Pasadena and the surrounding community. This effort cumulated in over 50,000 volunteer hours and a contribution of over $1.5 million. The JLP purchased, refinished, and deeded to the Pasadena Unified School District the Madison Neighborhood Village and Cornerstone Cottage, which serves as a place where children, their families, and neighborhood residents can convene for enrichment activities, academic support, literacy development, and a variety of health and human services.
Girls Rock! was a signature project that endowed young girls with confidence, believing in their potential, and the skills necessary to reach their goals. This program provided unique and innovative developmental learning experiences for middle-school-aged girls that positively impacted their lives and strengthened their personal foundation for their future.
Kids in the Kitchen began with the goal of engaging children in the preparation of healthy meals and snacks in partnership with local community organizations, chefs and nutritionists. This program promoted child health and wellness by empowering children and youth to make healthy lifestyle choices, aiming to prevent obesity and its associated health risks.
The JLP participated in Pasadena Educational Foundation’s award-winning My Masterpieces program, leading over 60 tours. My Masterpieces connects Pasadena Unified School District’s second-grade students to the public art in Pasadena’s city center. These fun and educational walking tours incorporate grade-level education with a showcase of publicly accessible local art treasures. Students walk away with a newfound appreciation of the art that is all around them, and are able to return to these public installations with friends and family.
