La Cañada Flintridge residents will no longer have to trek to La Crescenta or Altadena to vote in person for the Nov. 3 election. City officials announced on Tuesday that the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s Office signed a site agreement with the La Cañada Unified School District for a five-day vote center.
“With the change in how the county allocates vote centers around Southern California, I think it is important that La Cañada Flintridge has a vote center located in town,” said LCF Mayor Mike Davitt. “We want people to vote and want to create all reasonable avenues to assist people in that process. I’m appreciative of all the work that the city staff has committed to this priority, and it appears we have been successful.”
The district’s board room located at 4490 Cornishon Ave. will serve as a vote center from Oct. 30-Nov. 2 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and on Election Day from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
According to City Clerk Tania Moreno, the county wasn’t able to secure a site agreement for a polling place in LCF during the recruitment process and “had exceeded the minimum legal requirement for the number of vote centers in the county.”
During a virtual City Council meeting on Oct. 6, City Manager Mark Alexander said residents reached out to him after noticing LCF’s absence from the county’s list of locations for in-person voting and was “hoping to persuade” the county to consider a vote center in LCF.
Other options for residents include returning mail-in ballots at a drop-off box located outside the La Cañada Flintridge Library by Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. and going to City Hall on Monday, Oct. 26, during which it will serve as a flex vote center where people can vote in person or drop off a ballot from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
The local vote centers will adhere to state and county public health and safety guidelines that include wearing facial coverings and gloves, social distancing of at least 6 feet and sanitizing all surfaces and ballot marking devices. Election workers will be wearing protective masks and gloves.
