Girl Scout Clare Hawkinson recently planted a variety of produce plants for Villa Esperanza’s students to enjoy.

Clare Hawkinson of Girl Scout Troop 1961 completed an extensive gardening and landscaping project for Villa School as part of her Girl Scout Silver Award. The project supports students ages 5-22 with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
When Hawkinson was brainstorming potential volunteer sites, she thought of Villa School, as she had previously participated in a Villa service project with Mayfield Junior School.
Clare developed three garden areas that will provide sensory enrichment for Villa’s students. Many of Villa’s pupils are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and a curriculum that provides opportunities for multisensory engagement is important for their success in the classroom and beyond.
Students can now enjoy added greenery, the smells of fresh herbs such as basil and can even contribute to the care of the new gardens with vegetables such as broccoli, butter lettuce, radishes and beets.
