In celebration of Five Acres’ 130th birthday in 2018, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger has recognized March 12 as “Five Acres Day” in LA County. Barger’s official proclamation took place recently at the LA County Board of Supervisors meeting in downtown LA.
“For 130 years, Five Acres has cared for the physical, mental and emotional needs of children,” said Barger in a tweet on her Twitter page. “It emphasizes supportive services and truly has a passion for connecting kids with permanent, loving homes. I’m glad we could celebrate its legacy today.”
Five Acres was established as an orphanage in downtown LA in 1888 and is one of the oldest nonprofits in San Gabriel Valley. The celebration of Five Acres Day coincided recently with Five Acres’ annual board celebration at the Altadena Town and Country Club. The private event included the induction of new Five Acres board members and executive committee as well as the appreciation of departing board members. An award ceremony honored advocates who made significant strides in furthering Five Acres’ mission of safety, well-being and permanency for children and families in Southern California.
