John Rupert Privett was born in Woonsocket, South Dakota, on Jan. 26, 1933, to parents Rupert and Agnes Privett. John passed peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 9.
When John was a young boy, his family moved to Boise, Idaho, where his dad set up his medical practice. John was an avid skier who felt at home in the outdoors. He loved to explore, hike, climb mountains, camp, cycle and run marathons.
He also had dreams to follow in his dad’s footsteps as an ophthalmologist. And in 1961, John graduated from Creighton University Medical School and after his residency in ophthalmology he packed up and moved his family to La Cañada Flintridge, where he practiced for 47 years.
John loved to continue to learn and teach. He was proud to be an associate clinical professor at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute for many years. John was also an active member of the La Cañada Kiwanis Club for more than 30 years. He also really loved to work as a welder on the LCF Rose Parade float every year.
John loved a lot of things, but he mostly loved his family. He is survived by Julie Privett and his three sons: Mike (Robin) of Encinitas, John (Cissy) of Hermosa Beach and David of LCF. John was a wonderful grandfather to nine grandchildren.
John will be remembered for his many contributions to his medical field, his care of his patients and his expert skill on the Slip ‘n Slide and Rollerblades. But mostly, John will always occupy a special place in the hearts of his family and friends, who will not forget the gentle man that he was and his humble smile. The family will gather to celebrate his wonderful life at a later date.
