Irene R. Elshoff, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on March 5. Irene was born on May 23, 1930, in Martins Ferry, Ohio. She attended Catholic grade school, Martins Ferry High School, and the University of Cincinnati from which she earned a bachelor of science in home economics. It was at the university that Irene met E. Calvin (Cal) Elshoff, an architecture student. The two married in 1953.
Irene and Cal lived in Cincinnati where their first four children, Matthew, Cindy, Heather and Jennifer, were born. A job transfer brought the family to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where their youngest child, Drew, was born. In 1965, Cal was again transferred, this time to California, and the family moved to La Cañada Flintridge and joined St. Bede the Venerable Church.
Even while raising five children, Irene was always engaged in volunteer work. She supported all of her children’s schools and was also very involved in Catholic causes, including Catholic Charities; ACCW; Legion of Mary; Sacred Heart Retreat League; St. Francis Mothers’ Guild; St Bede Parish Council of Women; Sisters of Social Service; Daughters of Charity, and member of the Equestrian Order of Holy Sepulchre, among others. Irene was awarded the papal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal and the Cardinal’s Award.
Irene is survived by her husband of 65 years, Cal; her five children, Father Matthew Elshoff, OFM Cap, St. Lawrence Brindisi Church, Watts; Cynthia Lupica (Anthony) of LCF, Heather Boensel (Matthew) of Salinas; Jennifer Kirk (Thorley) of Mansfield, Texas; and Drew Elshoff (Lisa) of Valencia; as well as 11 grandchildren: Annelise, Nicholas, and Gregory Lupica; Michael, Patrick, Kaitlin, Matthew and Colleen Boensel; and Kyle, Allison and Ryan Elshoff. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Marisa Anne Lupica.
Irene is also survived by her sister, Margaret, of Watertown, Wisconsin, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Irene was predeceased by her parents, George and Anna, her sister, Helen, and her brother, John.
A rosary will be said for Irene at St. Bede Church on Friday, March 15, at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, also at St. Bede Church, with Father Matthew Elshoff presiding. Burial will follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irene’s memory to the Marisa Anne Lupica Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, or to the St. Francis High School Scholarship Fund, La Cañada Flintridge.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Cabot & Sons Funeral Home.
