Richard Ernest Smith

Richard Ernest Smith (Ernie) passed away on Wednesday, January 13th. Born in 1933, he was the third and youngest child of Ben and Louise Smith joining siblings Ben Jr. and Barbara.
Always a big presence, Ernie worked his entire adult life for Ben F. Smith Inc., the concrete construction company founded by his father in 1928. The company grew to over 300 employees and has locations in El Monte and San Diego, CA.
Ernie’s love of athletics began at Black Foxe Military Academy, ’52. He made many lifelong friendships through sports. Claremont College has published a tribute documenting his athletic accomplishments. Please go to https://cmsathletics.org/general/2020-21/releases/20210118hcwlts to read the tribute.
Ernie was married to Evelyn Smith from 1960-1980. They raised their four children: Carolyn, Deborah, Ronald, and Barbara in Arcadia, CA. During this time, Ernie was a volunteer and official for the Tournament of Roses.
Ernie was married to Donna Dianetti from February 1990-April 2000.
Ernie had a great sense of humor but developed a more compassionate side after he got involved with AA. He celebrated 30 birthdays in the program!
The family will have a private niche-side service at Pacific View Memorial Park and Mortuary in Corona Del Mar, CA.
