Thomas “Tom” Gorecki passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, April 8, at age 50. A resident of Burlington, Connecticut, Tom graduated in 1986 from La Cañada High School, where he excelled in basketball among other sports.
After high school, Tom enlisted in the Navy, later moving to Connecticut, where he worked as an emergency medical technician and then as a licensed practical nurse, and started a family. At 32, he suffered a severe back injury at work that changed the course of his life and eventually led to many surgeries, numerous health issues and eventually paralysis. The injury may have robbed him of his health at a young age, but he also found numerous moments of joy with his family, friends and caretakers, and in his faith in the intervening years.
He dearly loved his family, especially his three beautiful children, each of whom in their own way also suffered along with Tom through the pain. Hopefully the peaceful rest that Tom realizes can also be found for all of those who loved and cared for him. Tom leaves behind his devoted and much beloved children Joseph, Lauren and Alexander Gorecki of Burlington, and his committed parents, Stephen and Carolyn Gorecki of West Simsbury, Connecticut. He was predeceased by his former wife Margaret Gorecki (Babiec) of Burlington. Tom was the oldest of six children; he is survived by his sister Laura Crichton (Dan) of La Cañada Flintridge; brother Tim Gorecki (Rachel) of West Simsbury; brother Peter Gorecki (Kristen) of Granby, Connecticut; brother John (Su Kyoung) of Manchester, Connecticut; sister Sarah Gorecki of Canton, Connecticut; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service in memory of Tom was held on April 12 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in West Simsbury.
