The Pasadena Poly varsity football team will be competing in the Rio Hondo League in the 2020 season. Panthers head coach Chris Schmoke (above) is 3-2 against RHL squads since taking over in 2013.

The 2020 high school football season is already looking interesting with the Rio Hondo League adding Pasadena Poly.
The Poly athletic department confirmed that school administrators from San Marino, La Cañada, Monrovia, South Pasadena and Temple City agreed to bring the Panthers into the Rio Hondo League for at least one season. The RHL will now have six teams and three autmoatic CIF-Southern Section playoff berths.
The move makes sense for Poly, who took on the Tigers in October and faced the Spartans and Rams in the 2018 season.
“We are excited to compete in the new league and looking forward to raising our game to play big schools week in and week out,” said Polytechnic head coach Chris Schmoke. “Most of the teams we have played before, scrimmaged and thrown against in the summer. I know many of the head coaches and they are good men as well as coaches.”
The Panthers competed in the Prep League, which has struggled to find replacements for several programs that have departed the past six years. Claremont Webb left the league, and rival Flintridge Prep and Palos Verdes Chadwick opted to compete in eight-man football.
Poly missed the playoffs for the first time under Schmoke, who took over in 2013. The Panthers finished 0-2 in a three-team Prep League.
Schmoke is hopeful that his program will keep its current rivalries alive, especially against Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep.
“We are hopeful that we will be able to continue our rivalry with Rio Hondo Prep [of Arcadia] and able to get back in a league with them and other schools in the near future,” he said.
