Residents Can Take a Swing at Pickleball Sept. 28

The city will launch a pilot pickleball program on Saturday, Sept. 28. Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and pingpong.
On opening day, there will be pickleball enthusiasts on hand from 8-9 a.m. to provide brief introductions and lessons on the sport. In addition, paddles and balls for visitors will be provided.
While the Parks and Recreation Commission looks for a permanent court option, pickleball will be played on the basketball court next to the La Cañada Flintridge Skate Park at 4490 Cornishon Ave. Pickleball hours of operation will be Saturdays 8-11:00 a.m and Sundays 1-4 p.m. .
The program is seeking ambassadors to serve at the temporary court during operating hours. Ambassador duties will include handing out city-provided equipment and teaching beginners how to play the game. Residents also are encouraged to bring their own equipment. Those interested in volunteering can email sbkoury@aol.com.
The program was initiated by resident Bill Koury, who presented the idea for pickleball to the commission in December 2018. Since then, the commission has heard from a pickleball expert, reviewed various court possibilities and decided to proceed with a temporary option until a permanent location is decided upon.
