San Marino High School girls’ tennis head coach Melwin Pereira does not envision his squad as an Open Division team, but his players are making a case for it as the Titans picked up another big win on Monday.
SMHS, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, traveled to Arcadia High and defeated the No. 10-ranked Apaches, 10-8, in a nonleague match on Monday.
Pereira, who was without his top player Anessa Lee, got six sets in doubles play and managed to get four singles victories from two freshmen. Selena Wu swept her opponents, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, and Nathalie Genyk added one victory.
Arcadia’s No. 1 doubles duo swept the competition but the rest of the group was blanked by the Titans. SMHS doubles teams Rakel Ang/Anna Moller, Margaret Piatos/Katie Kirkendall and Grace Carter/Elaine Wu each picked up two victories to give the Titans the edge.
San Marino (3-1 overall record) will begin Rio Hondo League play today on the road against Temple City at 3:30 p.m. The Titans will host rival La Cañada in a league contest on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 3:30 p.m.
