San Marino Rebounds at Blair; Holds On to 3rd Place in Standings

The San Marino High School varsity boys’ basketball team remained in the hunt for a CIF Southern Section playoff berth by defeating host Pasadena Blair, 69-32, in a Rio Hondo League contest last Friday.
The Titans (13-9 overall record, 3-2 in league) found success against the Vikings’ zone defense, scoring 19 points in the first quarter to build a double-digit lead early. San Marino kept its foot on the pedal and led comfortably, 52-24, through three quarters of play.
The win kept San Marino third in the Rio Hondo League standings and one game behind second-place Temple City.
“Before coming to Blair, I thought it was important that we honor some of our players before the halfway point who have been really great teammates through the season,” SMHS head coach Mihail Papadopulos wrote in an email. “We have some selfless boys that have been super enthusiastic off the bench, have been hardworking at practice, patient and supportive. That’s hard to get in today’s culture, and I am proud of our boys, of their buy-in and team-first attitude.

“I thought they gave us great energy, made some nice plays and showed that we have some depth of character and playing depth on our team. Junior Brendan Fagerberg had a well-deserved game today as he scored 11 points and played his usual heart out. This character will prove to be valuable in the second half of our league play.”
