Bill Podley, Brent Chang and Gregg Smith were among those who attended a previous “Stars for Tomorrow”
annual benefit. This year’s fundraiser will be held Thursday evening, Sept. 20, at a Pasadena estate.

The annual “Stars for Tomorrow” benefit, which will aid the nonprofit organization Stars’ after-school and mentoring programs, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 20, at a Pasadena estate.
The benefit will begin with a social hour reception and silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by dinner from Hope Catering and wine from Asuncion Ridge Winery, as well as a live auction.
This year the organization, formerly known as the Lake Avenue Community Foundation, is celebrating its new name — Stars:
Illuminate, Educate Advocate — as well as another productive year of serving students in Pasadena.
Live auction items include a Tournament of Roses New Year’s Day VIP package (including Rose Bowl game tickets, Rose Parade tickets, VIP passes to the Rose Bowl Tailgate Luncheon and VIP parking); tickets to an upcoming major concert (including dinner) at the Rose Bowl; a weeklong vacation at a spectacular home on the island of Hawaii; a wine weekend in Paso Robles; and a six-course meal and wine pairing for eight people at a Pasadena home. In addition to the auction, there will be an opportunity drawing that includes four Disney Park-Hopper tickets and an Apple iPad.
Local resident Lisseth Rojas-Flores is the honoree at this year’s event. The Stars board member is an associate professor at Fuller Seminary and longtime advocate for Stars students and families.
Rojas-Flores takes a special interest in addressing the interrelationships of family, mental health and social justice. She is examining the impact of immigration enforcement on Latino citizen children’s psychological and academic well-being in the U.S. She also is conducting collaborative research on the impact of community violence and trauma on adolescents, parents and teachers in El Salvador.
The event’s major patrons include Asuncion Ridge Winery, Because You Matter, Rich and Kim Chinen, the Cunningham family, Larry and Gerri Edson, Richard and Susan Gentilucci, Kathy Gibson, Linda Hall Augur, Lance Ito and Peggy York, Lake Avenue Church, John and Deanne Lewis, Dr. Kathleen Lucas and Basil Anton, Marah Lyvers/M1 Consulting, Outlook Newspapers, John and Kathy Prosser, David and Mary Sue Scheidler, Rosiris Paniagua/Tru Finance, Patti’s Way Charitable Foundation, Bill and Kathy Podley, and Adam and Nancy Stiles.
“We look forward to celebrating our after-school and mentoring programs at our upcoming ‘Stars for Tomorrow’ benefit,” said Stars Executive Director Nancy Stiles. “What a fitting tribute to honor our true stars — our students, families, volunteers and supporters. It will be an evening to remember.”
Event tickets are $175. To purchase tickets, a table of 10, or to become a sponsor, call Kim Chinen at (626) 817-4505 or email KimC@lakeave.org.
