The legend of La Cañada High School varsity boys’ basketball coach Tom Hofman continues to grow after he guided the Spartans to an 82-55 Rio Hondo League victory over visiting South Pasadena on Friday, Jan. 19.
The win was No. 700 for Hofman, placing him among the 17 winningest coaches in California, according to Cal-Hi Sports. He is eighth on the list of active boys’ basketball coaches in the state.
“It’s a great honor to be [on the list],” said Hofman, whose record in 32 years as a head coach is 701-212 as of this week’s Outlook press deadline. “If you look at the coaches up there, they’re the best in California. To be in the same list as them is a great honor.”
St. Francis is a small school compared to most, and in basketball, the Golden Knights are typically underdogs against big schools; however, that didn’t stop them from an impressive showing at Maranatha High’s Summer Block Party.
Corona Centennial has more than 3,000 students, making the St. Francis student body seem like pebbles in a rock pile. Recently, the teams went head to head, and the Golden Knights pulled away with a 62-53 victory.
Head coach Todd Wolfson reflected on the win: “We had four or five guys step up. We played team basketball. They represented the school and did some good things in all facets of the game. It was a great team victory.” Continue reading “St. Francis Looks Ahead After Maranatha Tourney”
The fall athletic season began with controversy but ended on a positive note for the La Cañada High School varsity football program. Former Los Angeles Loyola running back Drake Beasley transferred to LCHS during the summer but was ruled ineligible to play by the CIF Southern Section, but second-year head coach Ryan Zerbel didn’t allow that to become a distraction as he guided the Spartans to a 6-4 season, including stunning 28-13 victory over rival San Marino in the final week of the regular season, snapping a five-game losing streak over the Titans.
Well before the season began, San Marino High School varsity boys’ basketball coach Mihail Papadopulos knew he had strong group.
“We knew we had a close-knit group of boys and we knew we had a cluster of tough competitors,” Papadopulos said in an email. “It’s always interesting to see how a season can mature or destroy a team. For us this year, all the adversity and all the learning lessons just seemed to have strengthened our resolve.”
It also gave the Titans a grit that has been on full display in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs, and it propelled the squad to a 62-58 victory over visiting Barstow in a second-round game last Friday. Continue reading “Titans Reach Quarterfinals for First Time Since 1978”
