They may come from different walks of life, but the young women at Elizabeth House and the Tournament of Roses 2018 Royal Court have bonded recently in unexpected ways, eager to ask questions, learn from each other or just have a good giggle.
In its quest to realize this year’s theme of “making a difference” the Royal Court has begun a new tradition — selecting its own charity of choice. The court unanimously voted for Elizabeth House, a nonprofit that provides housing and support services for at-risk or homeless women who are pregnant.
“It was a group decision, but Elizabeth House was definitely the clear winner,” said Princess Lauren Buehner of Arcadia High School. “Once we all found out the mission of the charity and the incredible work they’ve been doing, everyone was on board.”

Harambee Christian Family Center emphasizes Christian education, affordable housing and employment opportunities through programs including after school programs, internships, preschool through 6th-grade education, a summer day camp and a community garden. Elizabeth House provides shelter and support to homeless pregnant women and their children in Pasadena. Proceeds were raised through the annual LCPC Parent Education Gala event in February and by selling “Wild Hope” ornaments.

It’s not unusual for first-time visitors to miss the Elizabeth House because they’re expecting some type of facility or some place more clinical.
They’re not looking for a house that matches all the others in its central Pasadena neighborhood, the place where La Cañada Flintridge’s Kate Rhymer has always felt right at home among women who are receiving not only much-needed shelter, but equally important support and love.
Since 1994, the two-story residence has served as a safe spot for the region’s homeless women and their children. Rhymer — who was honored at the organization’s annual gala this spring — has been integral to its function. Continue reading “Beloved Volunteer Shines for Elizabeth House Shelter”
