Students hired to participate in the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce Summer Internship Program shouldn’t expect to do much shredding or to be going on many coffee runs.
They should expect to be tasked with big-time responsibilities.
“I felt like I was the kid and was instructing adults on what to do, which is kind of strange,” said Nicole Johnson, a rising senior at La Cañada High School who participated in the program last summer as an intern for the Allen Lund Co., where she created three computerized training courses for 400 employees to use nationwide. Jeanne Mary Ellen (Newlin) Wallace was born in Asheville, North Carolina, on June 2, 1930, and died at the Huntington Hospital in Pasadena on May 4, 2018. A memorial service to remember and celebrate Jeanne’s life will be held on Saturday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church.
Jeanne moved with her family in 1933 from Asheville to Anderson County, Tennessee, where her father supervised the building of the waterworks for the town of Norris, which housed the headquarters of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Jeanne grew up with her beloved younger brother and sister, Jerry and Judy, in that little town, which had a population of about 1,500. Following her graduation from Norris High School, she enrolled in the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, later transferring to East Tennessee State College.

The 15th annual Kiwanis Club of La Cañada Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting event will be held this year along with a premium wine auction at Memorial Park on Sunday, Sept. 24.
The annual event is presented by the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada, the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and new this year, Rosso Wine Shop. Jeff Zimmitti, Rosso Wines owner, will coordinate the wine offerings.
“Jeff has brought in many new and exciting wineries for tasting and we know the people are going to love it,” said Mike Leininger, president of the La Cañada Kiwanis.
In fine fashion, the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce offered Grace Rickert a send-off Tuesday morning at Memorial Park, presenting her with the $1,000 Hillgren Scholarship.
The La Cañada High School graduate is headed to Cornell University, where she will study fashion and design management.
“I was set on Cornell from the start because they have this really unique program [that] combines design with creativity and business within the fashion industry,” Rickert said. “It’s so exciting. I’ve been sewing since I was in kindergarten and I started designing when I was in 5th grade. I remember, I had these 5th-grade idealistic goals like, ‘I’m gonna be the most famous fashion designer in the world!’ But I never thought I’d actually be on the way to learning it and setting it into motion and making it my career.”
