Cole Hammes scored a run in the Spartans home opener last Saturday. He is one of 11 seniors to be honored in La Cañada’s Rio Hondo League opener against San Marino this Friday.

After a one-year hiatus, the La Cañada High School varsity baseball team returned to action last week and picked up two victories over Sun Valley Village Christian.
First-year head coach Car Gschwender and longtime assistant coach Murph Proctor had the Spartans playing at a high level in the preseason and that success carried over into their season opener at Village Christian. Chris Nava collected a team-high three hits and drove in three runs to help La Cañada come away with a 14-4 victory last Tuesday.
Adam Geller and Ryan Kiessling also contributed to the offensive assault with two hits, two runs and two RBI apiece. Jakob Torres was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and one RBI, and Ethan Geller and Evan Umland each hit a single, scored and drove in a run. Timmy Park scored twice, Riley Kozakar singled and Brandon Cho, Keagan Serdar and Luke Woods each scored.

The LCHS varsity baseball team defeated Hesperia Oak Hills, 13-2, in a CIF-SS Division 3 semifinal on Tuesday. The Spartans, who advanced to their first CIF-SS championship game, include Connor Buchanan, Michael Callahan, Thomas Decker, Zach Feehan, Luke Fogarty, Ryan Graves, Joshua Gray, William Hartman, Ryan Kiessling, Riley Kozakar, Michael Lauenstein, Jason McCubbin, Kyle Osornia, Timothy Park, Brandon Shepherd, Ian Tinkham, Jakob Torres, Evan Umland, Tai Walton, coaches Carl Geschwender and Dave Olson and head coach Matt Whisenant.

There’s no stopping the La Cañada High School varsity baseball team. After two narrow playoff victories decided in extra innings, the Spartans made sure they wouldn’t need more than seven frames against host Hesperia Oak Hills. They scored five runs in the top of the third and added six more two frames later to build a big lead and defeat the Bulldogs, 13-2, in a CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinal. Graham Massimino scored La Cañada’s lone run in the Spartans’ 2-1 loss at North Hollywood Campbell Hall last Friday.

The La Cañada High School varsity baseball team was in unknown territory last Friday, playing a CIF Southern Section Division 5 quarterfinal for the first time since 1989.
“Historically, La Cañada hasn’t been in those type of games,” said LCHS head coach Matt Whisenant, who was a senior on the last Spartan team to play a quarterfinal playoff game. “It’s a lot different.”
As was his squad, which entered the contest riding a 13-game winning streak. The hot-hitting Spartans were held at bay as North Hollywood Campbell Hall staved off a late rally from visiting La Cañada for a 2-1 victory.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Whisenant’s squad began to claw its way back. Campbell Hall starting pitcher RJ Collins loaded the bases and walked Jonathan Shalklan, which allowed Graham Massimino put his team on the board.
