The San Marino High School varsity boys’ basketball team suffered two setbacks in Rio Hondo League play, falling to South Pasadena and La Cañada last week.
The Titans opened the week at South Pasadena last Tuesday and trailed 55-54 through three quarters. The Tigers ultimately pulled away for a big 83-77 victory that put them one game ahead of San Marino in the league standings.
Sean O’Brien led SMHS with 22 points, three rebounds and three assists, and Joey Fuerst chipped in 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Ethan Deng netted 15 points and recorded five assists, Ethan Mo had nine points, Lemuel Li finished with five points and five rebounds, and Trond Grizzell contributed five points.
San Marino then hosted first-place La Cañada in a league contest last Friday. The Titans kept up with the Spartans in the first quarter and trailed by only three points. La Cañada’s defense held SMHS at bay in the second, limiting the home squad to only nine points and building a 34-22 lead at the half.
Li led the Titans with 18 points and O’Brien added 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Fuerst netted 10 points and grabbed six rebounds, Brian Zhang finished with four points and three assists, Grizzell and Deng each scored three points, and Mo contributed two points.
The Titans (14-9 overall record, 2-4 in league) opened the week at Monrovia on Wednesday and will travel to Pasadena this Friday for a league game against Blair at 7 p.m.
