The San Marino varsity boys’ basketball team finished 2-2 in the Vista Tri-City Holiday Tournament last week with victories over Avalon and San Bruno Capuchino.

The San Marino High School varsity boys’ basketball team competed in the Vista Tri-City Holiday Tournament last week and finished with a 2-2 record.
The Titans (9-7 overall record) opened the competition by defeating Avalon, 72-41, last Thursday. The squad then played two tough opponents in Encino Holy Martyrs and Newport Beach Sage Hill on Friday.
San Marino battled Holy Martyrs in a close game, but the Armens pulled away for the 50-44 victory. The Titans suffered another defeat hours later when they fell to the Lightning, 67-62. SMHS struggled to contain Sage Hill’s 6-9 center.
The local squad concluded the tournament on a high note with a 62-41 victory over Capuchino of San Bruno.
“It was a great tournament experience for our boys,” SMHS head coach Mihail Papadopulos said in an email. “We were looking for growth experiences in all the games, but the two losses on Friday will probably prove to be the most valuable for us. We proved that our young group can compete against two good, mature teams and they showed that they could handle the intensity of the moment, which will serve us well in league. It was a great team bonding retreat week for us and fun to have that time together.”
Senior Eric Fu broke out this tournament and developed some much-needed confidence. Ethan Deng continued his stellar offensive play, averaging 23 points per game in the tourney, including a 31-point output against Avalon.
The Titans returned home to host Alhambra on Wednesday, Jan. 2, and will open Rio Hondo League play this Saturday, January 5. San Marino will host rival South Pasadena in the teams’ league opener, which will begin at 5:15 p.m.
