Turtle Island Quartet to Perform at Caltech on Feb. 11

The Turtle Island Quartet with special guest Cyrus Chestnut will present a program titled “Jelly, Rags & Monk” on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium.
This Grammy Award-winning quartet is joined by jazz pianist Chestnut for a program of jazz and classical traditions from Jelly Roll Morton to Thelonious Monk.
In the first half of the 20th century in America, the giant of ragtime and jazz was Jelly Roll Morton. Morton’s nod to his New Orleans Creole roots, Turtle Twist, is an example of his trademark “Spanish tinge” style that was to reverberate throughout all period of jazz that followed. Monk cites Morton as one of his main influences. His “Blue Monk” incorporates ragtime rhythms and bent harmonies. Given a more modern reading is Joplin’s evocative “Pineapple Rag,” which provides the quintet an opportunity to show off the swing style intended by the composer.
Tickets are $45, $40 and $35; youth (high school age and younger): $10. Senior and student rush tickets will go on sale for $25, beginning one-half hour before the performance (subject to availability). Tickets can be purchased at the Caltech Ticket Office at 101 Winnett Center.
Parking for Beckman Auditorium is located at 332 S. Michigan Ave. (south of Del Mar Boulevard) in Pasadena. For information, call (626) 395-4652.
