‘Millionaire’s Row’ Estate Seeks New Owner for $10.5 Million

The Pasadena landmark John S. Cravens estate, also known as the Red Cross house, is being sold for $10.5 million by the humanitarian organization to find a better fit for its San Gabriel Pomona Valley chapter headquarters.
Situated on “Millionaire’s Row,” along tree-lined Orange Grove Boulevard and Madeline Drive, the estate is one of the largest and most significant architectural treasures in Pasadena. Local Sotheby’s International Realtors Gretchen Seager and Josie Tong will represent the sale, and said they will donate their commission to the American Red Cross.
Surrounded by brick walls, wrought iron gates and mature trees, the Cravens Estate was built in the late 1920s at a reported cost of $1.25 million for John S. Cravens, president of the Southern California Edison Co, and Mildred Mary Myers, the heiress and daughter of tobacco company magnate George Myers.
Steel-reinforced concrete, brick veneer, imported European finishes and a Vermont slate roof were used in the construction of the seven-bedroom, nearly 20,000 square foot mansion.
After the Cravens died, the estate passed through several owners and some parts were sold separately. Eventually, it was owned and then donated by Simon G. Zervos, an industrialist and bakery owner, to the American Red Cross in 1962. Today, it sits on 1.5 acres.
The Cravens Estate was given the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation Award in 1965 and designated as a Cultural Heritage Landmark by the city 1971. In 2010, it was honored as the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and underwent partial restoration and renovation by many talented and well-known local designers.
The American Red Cross said it intends to honor the heritage and beauty of the mansion, according to the Cravens Estate website. To that end, they are marketing the property to potential buyers who appreciate the historic nature and architectural significance of the estate, and will add their own chapter to the illustrious history of this landmark property.
